Cactus Garden at Beverly Gardens Park

Between Camden Drive and Bedford Drive on Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA

The Beverly Gardens Park stretches across 23 blocks from Wilshire Boulevard to North Doheny Drive on Santa Monica Boulevard for 1.9 miles. It is a linear park which has many facets to it including a pergola, lotus pond, lily pond, sculpture garden, and cactus garden. This park was established in 1907, beginning with three blocks and has been expanded to the many blocks it has now. In 2019, the park was renovated and the Cactus Garden had some major changes.

The historical nature of the Cactus Garden yields large living specimens and under the artful eyes of the landscape architects Studio-MLA, plants have been moved and rearranged.

Besides the cactus garden at Huntington Library and Botanic Gardens, I cannot think of any other place in Southern California that has a cactus garden that is as aged as the the cactus garden in Beverly Hills. The massive girths of the cactus and the enormity of the agaves is a wonder in themselves.

Modernism meets nearly 100 year old living specimen. There are raised beds at the Cactus Garden along with an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant accessible path.

If you like cactus as much as I do, and enjoy a lovely modern landscape design, the small cactus garden section at this park, packs an enormous visual statement.

I visited this garden in the fall and encountered some beautiful blooms and fruit.

Though you might wonder if it is worth a drive to visit the congested and touristy Beverly Hills, the Beverly Gardens Park is worth a visit should you be in that area. And if you’re a tourist, you should defintely make some time to visit it. The garden is a reminder that it can be a reflection of a vibrant city steeped with California history.

Free admission from dawn to dusk. Official address for your GPS is 9439 Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.
